Dutch Government Urges People to Attend the World Conference of Women's Shelters

Published: Sep 18 2015

The Dutch Government wholeheartedly supports the 3rd World Conference.

Violence against women and girls may well be the most substantial and unrelenting crime against humanity of our time. Worldwide, 1 in 3 women will become victims of violence at some point in their lives. The unbalanced power equation and economic inequality between men and women are usually the root cause.

The issue of violence against women is complex and requires extensive cooperation.

Quote State Secretary Van Rijn: This is why I think it is so important that as many people as possible attend this World Conference; not just those who work for women's shelters, but also those working for the government, business and science. Together, we can exchange knowledge and experiences, and strengthen existing alliances and promote new ones. Working together is essential for an effective approach to violence.

In the Netherlands, the approach to domestic violence is based on the following three pillars: strengthening the position of victims, dealing with the perpetrators, and breaking the intergenerational chain, because we must ensure that violence against women is not passed on from generation to generation. The Dutch approach also focuses on cooperation: with municipalities, care services, police, the public prosecutor and, of course, women's shelters.

Quote from Minister Bussemaker: Breaking the chain of violence is not just about cooperation: prevention is also of the utmost importance. This starts with creating awareness amongst young people of the importance of healthy, equal and non-violent relationships and enhancing their sexual resilience. In addition, we concentrate on the economic self-reliance and empowerment of women. When women can look after themselves financially, it increases their freedom of choice and enhances their position in society. It is also important that men do not tolerate violence against women and girls.
These themes and many other interesting themes will be discussed during the Conference. Together, we can give a massive boost to the common goal: to end all violence against women!
